Emma Dog, senior dog - 2015

There are not many humans who cross my path that can resist the charm of canines.  The adorable, cuddly cute puppy, the rowdy adolescent or senior dogs with their whitened muzzle, progressive and irreversible changes. Our furry friends without fail do indeed touch our lives and our heart no matter what age they may be.   There among the shared adventures, the countless photos taken and the perpetual comfort dogs give, despite the random mishaps, our bond with our dogs continue to grow strong.

Recently Emma dog turned 14 years old and watching her progress from puppyhood to old age is like watching a mini version of aging humans.

Hearing not as sharp, sight not as keen, and at times it appears as if she is lost or uncertain, possibly the onset of canine cognitive dysfunction. She has a tendency to cling and her bark is no longer as powerful or convincing.  Yet despite the changes of aging Emma, for a senior dog her appetite is good and she continues to entertain managing to keep some pep in her steps even though the endurance, the stamina has dwindled.

We reminisce of Emma at play in her earlier days and the doggie adventures that bring a smile to our face, yet find more so then not, are thoughts interrupted with the occasional concerns now that she shows signs of aging.   No matter the severity, it does pull at the ole’ heartstrings knowing that one day all will end. Until then we continue to take each stage as it comes and remain committed to our fascinating furry companion to the bitter end.  That is what happens when one loves, we hold on till the bitter end.

Quote by French writer, Anatole France, “Until one has loved an animal, a part of one’s soul remains unawakened.”   stirs the continued memory making with Emma dog our senior dog and those shared canines of days gone by, like Dusty, Cricket, Barney, Digger and Maggie.

Dogs do have an extraordinary affect on many aspects of human conditions.  They add to the beauty of our life.   Their companionship and entertainment definitely awakens the soul. I hope you are enjoying your dogs as much as we enjoy Emma Dog, senior dog.

What animal(s) have awakened your soul?
