There is something playful about those symmetrical spiral curly curls created by a Spiral Cutter that intrigues, the colorful haystack of spiraled vegetable garnish that occasionally accompanies an entree while dining out. It appears I am one of the few, out of those I know who actually gives attention to its creative purpose on a plate, let alone eat it. My curiosity is always aroused and on this day, being in one of my experimental modes I wonder what might end at the dining table this week that includes a spiral twist.
Usually with eyes closed I flip through one of my cookbooks until the urge to stop occurs and from the chosen page is what I prepare. Well, 80% of the time for I refuse to cook anything to do with liver or some similar oddity. Today, while the fingers flip through the pages the mind is back to thinking of the Spiral Cutter. Hand-held or tabletop, one thing lead to another aborting the cookbook search for the internet. Oddly enough the first two recipes, Cauliflower Alfredo and Avocado Pesto piqued my interest. Taking a closer look both called for the use of a Spiral Cutter to make zucchini noodles taking me on yet another search.
Although the choices were slim, a hand-held Spiral Cutter was purchased. The chosen Spiral Cutter by Microplane ended with a major disappointment. The performance did not match any of the rave reviews, durability and versatility as claimed. Vegetables did not spiral, getting stuck in the apparatus and very difficult to clear all vegetable matter from the blades without getting poked or cut by the blades. Cleaned and repackaged the Microplane Spiral Cutter was returned.
Much to my surprise both recipes were quite the success -- equally tasty, creamy and flavorful. Despite having to exchange the zucchini noodles for spaghetti noodles these recipes are a great alternative to those standard ole’ time favorites. Definitely worthy to try again once I purchase a Spiral Cutter. Should your dare to venture from the norm, I share the recipes below and ask...
Does anyone have a Spiral Cutter they can recommend?
